About Us

On North Western Avenue in Ukrainian Village, there's a bar that doesn't try to be anything other than exactly what it is. The Empty Bottle opened in 1992 and has spent every year since booking the kind of music that makes you feel like you discovered something before anyone else did. International touring acts share the same stage as local bands playing their third-ever show. That mix is the whole point.

Step inside and the layout tells you everything. A small front room with a pool table that sometimes doubles as an art installation. A main floor that puts you close enough to the stage to feel the kick drum in your chest. A raised back bar where you can watch the whole room breathe. The staff keeps your glass full without making you ask twice, which regulars will tell you is worth as much as the music itself.

With a 4.7-star rating across nearly 1,600 reviews, the Bottle has earned its reputation the hard way, one sweaty Tuesday night at a time. Half of Silversun Pickups showed up here for an acoustic set. That's the kind of thing that just happens at this place.

What We Offer

The Empty Bottle runs live music most nights of the week, covering indie rock, experimental, punk, jazz, electronic, and just about everything in between. Tickets are typically affordable and often available at the door, keeping the room accessible to anyone willing to show up.

Beyond the stage, the bar pours a solid selection of beers on draft and in cans, with spirits and cocktails that get the job done without the craft-bar price tag. The venue also hosts private events and art installations, occasionally transforming the pool table area into a gallery space. If you're looking to book a show, rent the space, or just check the upcoming calendar, the website at emptybottle.com keeps everything current.

"First time checking out the Bottle only because half of the Silversun Pickups were there doing an aucostic show . Loved the place old Chicago style bar , staff was great always checking if you needed anything. They have a resident cat as well she was laying on the bar before a lot of people got there which is cool if you like cats like me . Music was great of course. Definitely would go back"

"Classic concert venues on the west side of Chicago hosting internationally renowned acts to local performers. Very cool bar sitting at the back of the stage floor. A raised upper floor also allows more patrons to pack themselves in for a show. The bathroom graffiti and stickers are the best!"

"This is such a cool venue in an unexpected place! You enter to a small garage-like room that has a pool table that when I visited was converted into an art table that was full of photography and crafts for a local art sale. You can go left and checkout a small pizza shop or continue forward into the bar and music stage! I loved how it kept me guessing at every turn, clearly a lot of fun happens here! I’ll have to check it out for a music show sometime, I hear they do a winter dance fest every February where they close down the parallel street for music and joy! I didn’t grab a drink at the time but I imagine they have all the classics and probably some fun ones on tap. Clearly a spirited community hub."

"AMAZING SPOT. I loved that there are various spots where you can stand up and listen. Vibes were on spot, and it's everything that you'd expect from an independent live music venue. It also made me happy that they had non-alcoholic options other than the usual water and soda. Would come back anytime, had a great time."

"Dive bar! Came in late on a Sunday evening had to kill time to get into my air bnb.. definitely a local spot didnt get much interaction with the bar tenders... or patrons but was cool to see what locals do in this area at this time. If you want a quick shot or drink I would recommend."

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of music does the Empty Bottle book?

The booking runs wide: indie rock, post-punk, experimental, jazz, electronic, hip-hop, and plenty of genres that resist easy labels. The consistent thread is quality and discovery. You're as likely to see a buzzing touring act as a local band on the verge of breaking.

How do I find out about upcoming shows?

The full calendar is at emptybottle.com. Shows are listed with ticket links, and many events also appear on their social channels. Checking the site directly is the most reliable way to stay current.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance?

Many shows are available at the door, but popular acts sell out. For anything you're committed to seeing, buying in advance is the safe move. Ticket links are posted on the website for each event.

Is the venue all-ages or 21+?

Most shows at the Empty Bottle are 21 and over due to the bar license. Some events are designated as all-ages, so it's worth checking the specific show listing before you head out.

Can I rent the Empty Bottle for a private event?

Yes. The venue hosts private events and has been used for art shows, release parties, and other gatherings. Reach out through the contact form on emptybottle.com to discuss availability and details.

Where exactly is the Empty Bottle located?

The address is 1035 N Western Ave in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood, 60622. Street parking is available in the area, and several CTA bus routes run along Western Avenue.

What's the layout like inside?

You enter through a small front room with a pool table, then move into the main floor in front of the stage. A raised upper level at the back of the room offers a broader view of the floor and stage. It's compact enough to feel intimate but open enough to move around.
